Enix - a pueblo blanco in the Sierra de Gádor...

Immediately behind Roquetas is the Sierra de Gádor mountain range – it is a twenty minute drive to Enix, one of my favourite pueblos blancos. To the northwest is Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, whose southern slopes are dotted with the charming white villages of the Alpujarras.

Enix is a typical pueblo blanco. Often old men with flat caps and walking sticks sit on the benches in the town square busily chatting and watching the world go by. Dogs laze in the doorways of the white houses. Just beyond the town centre, pine and eucalyptus trees border the road.

Alboloduy - a village in the Alpujarra Almeriense © Robert Bovington---

Alboloduy © Robert Bovington

Alboloduy is nestled at the foot of a mountain with orchards of citrus, grape and olive spread out across the valley below. A lovely looking church stands prominent amidst the little white houses of Arabic origin that tumble down the hillside. The town is situated in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park.

Tabernas Desert

The Tabernas Desert is located a few miles from Almería, between the great rocky masses of the Sierra de los Filabres and the Sierra Alhamilla. It is a dramatic almost moonlike landscape and what plants that exist within this habitat twist and bend amongst the great cracks in the earth in search of some moisture. Salt cedar, oleander and brushwood have adapted to the conditions of extreme aridity and the local fauna mainly consists of insects, toads, hedgehogs and scorpions. A number of birds can be seen flying over the dry gullies and riverbeds including the swift, rock martin, crested lark and jackdaw. It is the only true desert in Europe.

It may be a desert but I like it. The scenery is startling. The arid yellow ochre landscape contrasts with the vivid blue Almerian sky. The annual rainfall here does not exceed 250mm and the year-round average temperature is over 17 degrees. It has 3000 hours of sunlight per year, making it an ideal spot for a solar energy installation and that is why the largest centre of solar energy in Europe, the 'Solar Platform of Almería' has been installed in this area.

Almería Cathedral © Robert Bovington...

The 'Cathedral' is the other principal monument in Almería. It was designed as a place of prayer and of war, when it was built in the sixteenth century. This was because the shores of Almería were continually under attack from Turks and Berbers and so it was designed as a place of refuge as well as worship. It was built in a Gothic style with a Renaissance façade.
